Look! I made a book!
Over the last two Saturdays I took a bookbinding class hosted the Paper Crane. Participants get to construct their own book (one complete, and one in-progress above) and then we have until early March to, gasp, fill it up. So this is really just step one! I’ve been interested in bookbinding for years and finally this project is an excuse to actually do something with that. And hey, I took the photos too, on our deck. Not bad for a gray November Sunday, eh?
Materials:
kitchen twine
beeswax
needle
bone folder
bookbinding cloth
book board
ribbon
PVA glue
Paper (duh)
Awl
Otherwise, this might well be the most I can muster for a blog post this week, with the holiday, family, and the common cold all making their rounds this week. (Some less welcome than others… I’m looking at YOU germs). But I’ll catch you when I can!

Love the end pages. Where can I find that silverware pattern? I’ve been looking around for some vintage etching style prints like this.
Thanks, great blog.
on November 21st, 2010 at 9:05 pmYes the end papers caught my eye to. There is a company in England called Falkiners that sells all sorts of printed paper. Maybe Talas in the USA might stock them.
The very first book I bound was covered in blue fabric, quite uninspiringly I called it the blue book.
I hope your muse leads you to a better title for your first book.
Best wishes
Richard
on November 22nd, 2010 at 3:42 amI do too, Richard! The first dummy book I ever made was also underwhelmingly entitled The Purple Book. Not blue, but close. So funny!
Thanks!
on November 22nd, 2010 at 9:45 pmHi Kris! I believe that particular paper is from Paper Source. Looks like it’s not on their site, though there is this similar one: http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/item/Kitchen-Pool-on-Red-Fine-Paper/3101.001/101903.html
Thanks! :-)
